The procedure is called a colposcopy and can be done with or without biopsy. The colposcope is inserted into the vagina and then your cervix is stained to see if any visible abnormalities can be identified. If so, then a biposy is sent to the lab so that proper diagnosis can be made by the pathologist. Abnormal pap smears are common and the coloposcopy helps your doctor determine the best treatment for your specific abnormality. It may cause minimal cramping like you have while on your cycle.

The use toludine blue dye and vinegar rinse to find out exactly where there may be any abnormal cells. The dye only sticks to abnormalities and rinses clean off of healthy tissue. It's easy and painless. If they decide to biopsy an area, though, that will cause some cramping.
