So, I'm not a doctor, I just play one on tv.

My friend is a little anxious right now. She had a regular the first few days of December. She had unprotected sex on the 21st and 22nd of December. Then, she says on December 28th, she had some bleeding like a period, but on the 29th, it was extremely light and gone by the early afternoon of the 29th. She has never had a period that short. Meanwhile, she has been headachy on the 30th and today, the 31st. Also on these days, her appetite was strange--she felt nauseated. She also woke up this morning nauseated and could not eat anything but a dry cracker and some tea. Could she be pregnant?

I have heard that the symptoms and timing vary vastly woman to woman--some have said they knew within days, others say it takes them weeks. I wonder ...

Well, there is a possibility. the bleeding could be implantation bleeding - a light period, that turns to a dischargy pink at the end - usualy lasting 1-2 days MAX.

The timing does add up quite well, and there is never a real "too early" symptom. I had morning sickness at 2 weeks pregnant. Food adversions (couldnt look at certain foods without getting sick) at about 1 week, and I had major food cravings (darn kiwis) at 3 weeks.

I also found that crackers and tea were all that worked for me - untill I started tasting things more, and the salt on crackers caused me to vomit more. I switched to Arrowroot cookies. Also, if she is, get her off the tea, or switch her to decafinated. Caffiene can actualy cause damage to the growing fetus at that early of a stage - neurological development becomes prominant from 2-4 weeks - and the caffienecan alter that. Try Gingerale - ginger is VERY healthy for the baby if she is, and it actualy tastes better if you end up bringing it back up from morning sickness. Tea is not plesant. lol.

I would get her to take a test at this point. I advise clearblue - since it is one of the most accurate at detecting EARLY pregnancy hormones. If she had a regular at the first of DEC, then get her to try it on the 3rd - 6th of Jan. Should give a clear result. If it is positive, get her to make a doctors appointment ASAP. The first visits are crucial - and she will be hooked up with bloodwork, and then a first prenatal appointment will be made after the bloodwork comes out positive. Good luck!

You both know the answer to the "could" question is yes! Unprotected sex = the possibility of pregnancy...heck, even "protected" sex can equal pregnancy...I have friends with condom babies, sponge babies, and even pill babies! LOL...

Buy a home pregnancy kit...use it...and if she wants to use it today, buy a two pack so she can test again in a week or two just in case the first test is a false negative (or a false positive). Her symptoms could be psychological...worrying that you might be pregnant can result in pregnancy-like symptoms like nausea...but it could definitely be pregnancy since she did everything necessary to cause that to happen!

I know that the last time I got nauseated in the morning and had a weird period was seven years ago last June...my son turns seven next month!

I knew before I took any test or even missed a period. I was getting cramps like I would right before my period would begin, but they felt lower then they usually were. I went bathing suit shopping and I couldn't fit into the tops because my breasts were swollen. I was getting major headaches and found myself crying over a commercial. I know it sounds silly Lol, but thats how I knew it was time for a test.

Well, yes she could be pregnant. I would tell her to go and visit her doctor and have them check for her she very well could be. She should take a home pregnancy test as well. Though sometimes home pregnancy tests can be wrong. They can come up negative when it really should be positive.

You guys can go over her symptoms and all that. But it is not as certain as a test and not as certain as a doctors visit.

You should tell her to go buy a pregnancy test and take it. We are not doctors either.
