It does have its nicer/suburbanish neighborhoods, actually. My mom's cousin lived there.
It's not the greatest place to live, but if you choose your area carefully, it isn't necessariliy as bad as its generally-well-deserved reputation suggests.

i live in nj and i hardly hear about crime there. since september 11th the crime rate has gone down in manhattan and the areas around it . but there are so many places better that you could commute to nyc if that's what you are thinking of doing. & no, newark is not the murder capital of the usa that's camden nj which is more near philadelphia.

Newark is rough, look for Jersey City or Kearny

Go to a game at the Prudential Center, where they herd you like sheep the coupld of blocks from Penn Station, so you don't accidentally end up in the rest of the city.
Ironbound used to be a nice neighborhood, but no more. If you got a job offer there, live outside of the city (preferably to the west).

I would think that a British accent might be a pretext for some harrassment in any area, like Newark, with high crime.

Parts of it are pretty bad, some parts are ok (like the Ironbound). They're trying to do some urban renewal there, so I'd say it will get better. You might want to consider Hoboken or Jersey City.

If your not sure if it’s the right move I would suggest that you spend some time there. Use some of your Holiday entitlement in Newark and check the place out. I believe it’s a great place to be!
