He's done pretty well considering a lot of the players didn't want him to be their coach. He won the veterans over fairly quickly. You also have to give him credit for keeping Dick Lebeau. He realized that would be like firing Jesus, and if it's not broke don't fix it.
I don't think the late season defensive collapse is his fault. They lost Aaron Smith for the season. Players have been telling everyone for a few years now how underrated he is. I think now we're seeing how important he is when it comes to stopping the run.
It's definitely too early to make definitive judgements, but I think he's done a pretty good job for a rookie head coach. Things look good for the future. Hopefully he will become the second black head coach to bring home a superbowl ring.

Not a bad first year. Could have been better, but they still made it to the playoffs. Cowher is a tough act to follow. I'll give him some slack this year but I expect more next season.

Mike Tomlin had a pretty good year in his first year but definitely has alot of improving to do. Yeah the D is #1 but they most defitinetly have not played like it. They have loses to Arizona and the Jets and their conference was not competitive at all besides the Browns who made a run after starting the season on the wrong foot. Not taking anything away from Mike at all but just as there is some bright spots, there is also some things to worry about going into the playoffs and in the coming seasons.

He has met the team's expectations that were set for him. The STEELERS have made it to the playoffs a lot and that's where the owner want the team to be. We should win coach of the year I think. I know you and most people are going to say the Patriot's coach should get but he cheated in 95% of his games and would still be cheating if he didn't get caught.

I would have to say fair at best and here's why.
The Steelers lost to Arizona, New York Jets, Denver, and Baltimore all of which are not playoff teams.

Had Baltimore and Cincinnati played up to their par this season the Steelers record could easily be 8-8 or 7-9.

Their defense is #1 due to their very soft schedule. Only 3 playoff teams on their entire schedule. The rest of the teams are .500 or well below .500.

It's safe to say that Tomlin is cruising off of what Cowher left behind.

Tomlin definately exceeded my expectations though let's face it a lot of the pieces were left in place for him. He didn't take on a team like the Rams, or the Cardinals he took a position with a team that is historically the bullies of the AFC North and the rulers of that dark allie even when it was the AFC Central. Let's face it this team since getting Ben Roethlisberger is 34-14 in regular season play prior to Tomlin getting there including the AFC North title his rookie season and a superbowl championship two years ago. Tomlin walked into a team that was already one of the best in the league. I would hold off on comparing him to Cowher just yet. Cowher took the Steelers on at a time where they were at a fairly low point. I am not trying to take anything away from Tomlin but I think next year will really let us know with certain key players such as Alan Faneca coming up for free agency and let's face it he will not be back next year because there is no way that he is taking a pay cut and they have to protect the franchise player that is Big Ben. They were already one of the worst teams in the league in pass blocking and with the emergence of the Cleveland Browns I unfortunately don't see Tomlin and the Steelers winning the north next year. I hope I am wrong.

It's hard to judge a coach in his first season because when he follows a great coach, there is always that possibility that he is only winning because the previous coach already had him set up for success.

One example of a coach who is winning only because he was already set up for success is Norv Turner. Why anybody would fire a coach (Schottenheimer) who has a career winning record, just because he has a losing record in the playoffs, and then HIRE somebody who has an OVERALL losing record for his career is beyond me.

Don't get me wrong I'm not putting Tomlin in this category of coaches like Turner and Cam Cameron ect. If I had to guess what Tomlin's future will be like, I'd say he will have a very successful NFL career. Partly because he is already in a great organization.

Team has shown definite signs of weakness and softness since he has taken over. Cowher may have been a hard assed in your face coach but his teams were never soft.
