Obviously, to some degree it will, but historically wise, if the Patriots lose in the AFC Championship or the Super Bowl, they'll be 17-1 or 18-1 respectively. At that point, do we still match them with the 1972 Dolphins because they met/passed their win total, or do we disregard them because of the loss?

If they lose in the playoffs, it will lessen the team historically. They will mentioned as a great team. But you wont be able to talk about them without stating the fact that they couldn't go all the way.

Yes. They will still be considered one of the best teams ever, but if they don't win the Super Bowl, then they won't be THE best team ever. Besides, the 1985 Chicago Bears, who are also considered one of the best teams ever, finished 18-1 WITH a Super Bowl victory. Actually they didn't just win the Super Bowl, they outscored every opponent they played in the playoffs with a combined score of 91-10. They dominated everybody. They won the NFC Divisional playoff beating the New York Giants 21-0, then won the NFC Championship game 24-0 over the then Los Angeles Rams. Then had one of the most dominating Super Bowl victories ever with a 46-10 win over the New England Patriots.

So yes, if New England loses in the playoffs, it will mean the difference between being the greatest team ever and being just one of the greatest ever.

The main goal of any NFL team each year is a SB win. So in that respect a loss in the playoffs or the SB would lessen the 16-0 regular season record. They'd still have the bragging rights to being only the second team to go undefeated in the regular season but also because of that the bar has been set very high for them.

No. They'd still be cheaters in the Cheaters' Hall of Fame. A loss in postseason would only be sweet justice.

If they win the Super Bowl, you can not deny that they are in the top 3 of greatest teams ever to play, maybe number one. (cold shiver) if they don't win the super bowl, it will be a dissapointing season, and I think they will be compared evenly with 72 dolphins, but not better.
