Some workers in Missouri will get a raise starting Tuesday. The state’s legally mandated minimum wage rises 15 cents an hour to $6.65.
The raise is the inflation-based adjustment to the state’s wage floor that voters passed last year. That vote pushed the Missouri minimum up from the federal floor of $5.15 an hour to $6.50 an hour in 2007, with an annual inflationary adjustment.
The 2008 increase is tied to a 2.2 percent change in the Consumer Price Index between July 2006 and July 2007.
The increase puts Missouri’s minimum well above the current federal minimum wage of $5.85 an hour.
The federal minimum will bump up again in July to $6.55 an hour, and a third uptick, to $7.25, is scheduled for July 2009.
Not included in the raise are a few thousand Kansas workers who aren’t covered by the federal wage law. Unlike counterparts in Missouri, some Kansas workers have a wage minimum of $2.65 an hour.
