I support the Montreal Canadiens and we have 45 points and have played 39 games, but we are behind the Hurricanes who have 43 points and have played 40 games. The Rangers are two places behind them as well and have one more point - can anyone explain how this works - many thanks :) :) :)

Montreal is behind Carolina in the standings because the Hurricanes lead their division, and the three division leaders in each conference automatically get the top three spots.

You get a higher seed if you are the leader of your division.

the 3 division leaders go first, then the other 5 if a division leader has 40 points and a non division leader has 48 the division leader is still ahead
