According to scholars of old Chinese folklore, these 2 days will be the coldest days of the Lunar Calendar year. This occurs in a cycle of 4 years and so far have been pretty accurate. Also a date for Ching Ming is always misty and a slight drizzle. Funny or eerie but I have found this to be true even though it was predicted hundreds of years ago. I am thinking of translating some of these writings into English because it also gives the dates for planting different crops as well as what days are best for marriages etc. As soon as I have the date of the hottest day in 2008, I will have it posted and see whether the predictions are accurate or not. I am not sure but I think they base their findings on astronomy and the moon had a lot to do with it.

Sorry Bossdave, I wanted to add:-
Are there any basis to it ?
Today IS the coldest day so far as Hongkong is concerned. I am wondering about other places or does it only apply to China.

For one thing, the Chinese New Year starts Feb. 7, 2008, so Dec. 31/Jan. 1 is the predicted coldest day of THIS year. Secondly, I think that the prediction is for the average temperature worldwide, rather than locally (i.e. "depending on where you live").

Depends on where you live. In Sydney, Australia it's summertime down there and it's warm down therein the summer than in the winter. Another example is in Southeast,FL,USA it's supposed to be 59F on Wednesday when it's 83F today and 78F tomorrow. On Wednesday the whole east coast of the USA is supposed to be colder on Wednesday than Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. It varies form location to location.

Depends where you live.

Squirrels here are the most accurate & by far, they have always proven to be right, same goes again this year---& to think these wx forecasters have all their hi-tech equiment & can't even predict an entire day? The squirrels RULE! LOL
I'm serious---watch their behaviour first, if they bury or eat the nuts, & then check out their tails if they're thick & bushy----it's freaking people out! But the squirrels are right. Watch them closely.

I'm sorry to break it to you, but December 31 (today) here in D.C. is not that cold. We had much colder days back in November.
