You go into a gas station and hand the clerk money and tell them $40.00 on pump number 10. You go out and pump the first 99% (about 12 gallons) of the gas in the first two minutes. Within 35 cents of completing, the pump slows to a crawl and it take another minute to pump the last 35 cents. Why does it slow down at all if you've already prepaid? The pump is programmed to NOT GIVE you a penny more than the $40, so why the slow down and waste of another minute of your time? It should not slow down until the last drop. Poor design or do they just like irritating you for the fun of it?

Great question. I think about this every time I prepay. I have come to determine that they do it so you will just say...forget it they can have that last 10 cents worth. The gas station then gets to keep you 10 cents and everyone else's who does that each day. Think about it....it add up....and makes cents...ha ha....
I have thought about stopping and saying that it isn't worth the last ten cents in my tank....but I refuse to give it to the gas station so I just wait patiently.

They want to make certain that the pump doesn't give you a penny over the cost. Cheap skates!

It does that so that not a single cent will come out after that. Also, if you don't give it a little shake at the end you will end up not getting the last few drops. They are stingy with their gas.

They are hoping that you will be in a hurry and say forget the last 35 cents.Do you know how much they get per month by that happening.

It is kind of like you driving. If you see a stop sign up ahead, do you run up to it at 60 miles an hour and lock up your brakes? Or do you start lowing down and stop at a slow speed?

I think it is just a poor design. They want to make sure the pump shuts off before it gets to the prepaid amount. You know if it was going fast it just might give you a few extra cents of gas and we wouldn't want that to happen would we...
