Do NOT go up. The best FF games are 1-7, 6 IMHO being the best with 7 right behind it, then go in almost reverse order, 5, 4, 3, 1, 2.
8 is okay, its best feature wasn't even the game itself, it was the mini game Triple Triad.
9...okay, actually, 9 is great. Go get it after you're done with 6.
10 had a RETARDED story. I liked the gameplay, don't get me wrong, but RETARDED story.
11, MMO, don't care.
12, fun but nothing like any other FF game. Play it if you get bored of FF and want a little change.
Summation: 6, 7, 9, 5, 4, 3, 1, 2, 8, 10, 12, X-2.

ff4, 7 9, 11 and 12 are amazing games. 8 was fun but really a departure from what Final Fantasy is all about, its Fantasy not FF Soap opera... so 8 was disappointing, 10 was disappointing and really only those to me and Ive played 4-11 straight. My favorite game for the PS is Final Fantasy Tactics you should definitely give that a shot. Congrats on discovering the FF series, hopefully they dont mess up in the future and I think alot of old series fans remember that what made these games great was their incredibly well written and powerful story lines. Games are NOTHING without a good story sadly i think the gaming industry forgets that alot....

i'm currently playing 4, i'm half way through that. I've played and finished 7, finnished 8 about three times and have gotten half way through 9.
7 and 8 are my favorite two, i think 7 is probably better but i can't really remember. I am enjoying 4 although it is all 2d it's still great.
I think this is how they are ranked from best to worse from what i have read.
1- ff7
2- ff10
3- ff8, ff6
I'm not sure about how the rest of them are ranked.
From what i've played:
1- ff7, ff8
2- ff4, ff9
so next you should try ff10 or ff8 i think, i really enjoyed ff8.

FF1-2...got a bit monotonous in the gameplay after a while, but worth a play. Way too focused on the whole crystal thing though.
FF3-5 are definately worth checking out. Better graphics, and more of an expanded story arc. Definately more depth to the plot and characters.
Final Fantasy 6 is pretty good, and has a good storyline....definately one of my favorites.
The general concensus among gamers, is that FF7 is one of the greatest games ever.
Final Fantasy 8 frustrated many gamers because of the revised magic system, in which you essentially steal magic from your enemys. However, if you can stomach the magic system, it has what I would consider to be by far, the BEST story of any Final fantasy game.
Final Fantasy 9 was a rather cartoonish, and somewhat akward take on the series, possibly having something to do with the merger of Squaresoft, and Enix to become SquareEnix. Still, It keeps your attention, and was rather fun to play.
FF 10......well......fun to play....great combat system.....but it definately lacked something. If you skip any of the series, make it this one.
FF11.....Sorry...I never played this one, as it is a mmorpg. I couldn't justify paying a monthly fee for a game that I already payed 49.99 for in the first place....and from what I'm told...I'm not missing out on much.
FF 12....plays well so far. Drastic revisal of battle system, to all realtime.
Keep in mind that these numbers above are the Japanese numberings for the series as a whole. The Orininal FF was the same as the Japan one. FF2 -3 were not originally released in English speaking countries. FF 4 Japan was released as FF 2 for the Super NES, and FF 6 Japan was released as FF3 for super NES. If you can find any of the old Carts, they are quite valuable to collectors. Otherwise, pick up a port version for PS or PS2.
Good luck, have fun, and keep playing.

You can try FF 4 and 5, and some people liked 8, but after that they started to suck horribly. Stay far, far away from them. Especially FF12, which has no redeeming value whatsoever. The game even tells you this by letting you put yourself on autopilot.
I can however give you a list of other rpgs to try. Firstly, Chrono Trigger. Same company that did Final Fantasy, and it's the most epic storyline any rpg has ever had. The Tales Of series is good too. This includes Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Destiny, Tales of Destiny 2, Tales of Symphonia (the point where it really started getting good), and Tales of the Abyss (the really REALLY awesome one). Tales of Legendia was so bad most Tales fans have disowned it.
