No but my mom and dad did, it was a permanent fixture in our house. It was a set of Encyclopedia's Brittanica from A to Z in a real wooden bookcase. and on top sat the 12 in thick Dictionary. It sat in the corner of our living room like a piece of furniture.
Boy a lot of school work got done with those books, and I am glad I never got caught for plagerism or copy-right infringement. Some of my book report and essays were word for word from the encyclopedia's. I just remember copying away. But I also got good grades on them. Thank goodness.

I was the door to door salesman for Encyclopedia Britannica. I was in my very early 20's and this creepy, sexually harassing man dropped me off in Simi Valley before it was established. A car would come by much later and pick us up. I remember going to one house so upset that I was crying. They let me give the demonstration just to be nice. I quit shortly after he came onto me at a Christmas party. Sexual harassment was legal back then.

Mine was the World Book of Knowledge, came home one day and there were boxes and boxes of books. Along with the encyclopedias there was a set of 12 young peoples classics Moby Dick. Alice In Wonderland, Treasure Island ETC. 2 great activity books, dictionay, and every year we got an updated version with thing that happened that year. My neice left one at school, but I still have all the rest of them, and surprisingly still use them sometimes.

We got our set of "Funk and Wagnel" from the grocery store. Different book each week.....don't know if it was free after purchasing so much or just less money for the featured section. No pictures, difficult reading.....but got me by just fine. I got my kids the Brittanica through a school special. Bought the "Bible Story" set from a door to door salesman before I ever had kids. Always enjoyed those at the Dr's office.

My parents got hooked by an Encyclopedia Brittanica salesman. Then they were mad because I went to the library and used the World Book because it was written in language that a high school student could understand!

Yes I remember the door to door encyclopedia salesmen. As for other door to door jobs that have been made obsolete here is my short list off the top of my head the milkman the iceman (when we had ice boxes instead of refrigerators) brakeman (before the air brake was invented for the railroad) full service gas station where 3 guys came running out to check your tires, clean your windshield, and check your oil the trolley that used to run downtown I also miss my Grandmother referring to the living room as the parlor and the couch as the davenport.

I had the Book of Knowledge, of course long gone. But then, in my husband's attic, when we were cleaning out his house to sell it, I found a set! They were his when he was a child, and of course, I kept them! They are so much fun to read. I love the experiments that kids could do, they probably set a lot of kids on the road to science! Too bad there isn't something like that today. All kinds of art projects, things to do for a rainy day, things to make! I love them.
I also have the set of My Book House books of classic children's stories, but not from my childhood. They were a rummage sale find. Wonderful illustrations.

Nope-But I did-when I first married and then cancelled before they started-when I realized what I'd gotten myself into
P.S. Had an encyclopedia that belonged to my great grandmother circa 1890's. It was all in one volume and had no organization. Not by topic or alphabetical or anything. Just jumbled into one large book.

My Grandfather at one time sold encyclopedias. They came with all kinds of educational tools and games to help young ones learn. I remember that I was not allowed to play in the special boxes that were meant for his clients. They were a lot of fun. I had forgotten about those!

Yes, we did. World Book I believe. Plus all the yearly updates. Had to paste in all the tabs for reference to the changes. I think we ended up with 10 years of updated year books. The salesman made us feel guilty because we were neglecting our child's education. I grew with Collin's (not sure the name) and thought were too difficult to understand. They looked nice in our book case in the living room. The only time we use them is when need a stack for the dining chair for the kids to reach the table.
