Well, driving a car would be very dangerous if you didn't know how and you didn't understand the rules of the road. If you do know these things though, it's pretty safe.

It's the same when crossing oceans. If you know what you're doing, you're properly prepared and you know the rules of the road, it's pretty safe.

I live aboard a sailing yacht - though I've not crossed a big ocean (yet). Storms are a very real hazard, but our understanding of weather patterns and forecasting means we can mostly avoid them or get out of their way early enough. I've never seen a ea creature bigger than a pilot whale and even though I've sailed through the Straits Of Messina (between Sicily and Italy) with it's two legendary whirlpools, I've never actually seen them.

One hazard that does worry all sailors (and some larger shipowners) are the numbers of containers that fall overboard from container-vessels. Most of these float just below the surface for a long time before they fill up with water and sink. They are a very real hazard - I read somewhere that 10,000 containers fall off ships around the world each year.......

If you're sailing the USS Unsinkable (Literally), then it would be a breeze.
If you're walking on your two feet, you'll die even before you reach the first quadrant!
