I have some plants that have died recently, and there have been a few little flies around the house. I'm not sure which plants the flies are coming from. The dead ones or the current ones that may be dying, but i don't know yet. I even got a venus fly trap and it died as well. I live in a very dry city. How do i find which plants have the flies and why do they have them? How to take care of the problem, and is there anything i can do to prevent my future plants from dying?

guessing fungus gnats that are living in the soil...usually over watered soil. Check the plant with a bright flashlight, you will see the gnats crawling about the soil and base of the plant.

there are insecticides that you can mix with the water you water the plant with that will kill them out...Bt is a natural insecticide which is a bacteria that will kill the larvae...re-potting the plants with clean potting soil can help...placing a layer of sand on top of the soil is supposed to be a barrier to them

Randall....most flying insect sprays are in an aerosol. I wouldn't use these for the petroleum based propellants will burn the roots in the top layer of the soil.

We recently had this problem with a medium-sized indoor palm. We consulted a florist who told us to apply flying insect spray to the soil of the plant. This should not harm your plants only the gnats which are living in the soil.
Since beginning to do this we have had less of a problem with the gnats.
I hope this helps.

Try throwing out the dead ones and watering the living ones.
In a dry atmosphere, you can try hanging your plants in a steamy bathroom, but water regularly.

those flies don`t die. fly spray does not kill them. don't know if a venus fly thing will get them as well. they are too small, and only attracted to fruits.
