You have no control over your night dreams. But during the day you do. Those who have dreams or hopes & plans for the future and attempt to reach them are more alive. They are aware of their day because they want to make every minute count.

Because dreaming by day means one must stop their typical thinking, and allow the creative process to occur, while being cognizant of it, in a more certain way, than a dream one may have at night, forgetting in the morning...
As any artist (or creative human being) would agree, it is when we stop our mind s chatter, that we are creating at our best.

It isn't talking about dreams as in daydreams...but the kind of "dreams" that take planning, and working toward. People who dream by day is speaking about those people who are trying to accomplish something...the people who are working toward, say, cures for disease, world peace, etc. Those are the dreams by day....authors dream by day, as they write....artists as they paint, sculpt....poets...etc are also dreamers by day.They are cognizant, in other words, aware, have knowledge about the things that are going on around them, the issues people face in their lives. Their dreams achieve something, create something, bring enjoyment to someone.
Unlike dreaming at night...where your subconscious is at work and things are not real.
By the way, there is a key word missing form your quote...Poe said..."Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night." The only..... the ones who ONLY dream at night are those who do not care to see, hear, feel, experience the things that go on around them.

I think that this line does not literally mean day-daydreamers.
It is saying that the world at large are ignorant of the real issues about life (i.e. the philosophers).
Because as we know, we (most of us) would sleep at night and dream. Hence, it refers to the majority at large.

i guess it would mean that daydreamers have better recapitulation of their 'dreams'and have a solid and strong hold of them. they make their dreams while those who dream at night, their dreams just pass along without being able to know or remember the relevance of such dreams.

Honestly, that doesn't mean anything to me because I firmly believe that people who dream by day are lazy and are so wrapped up in their own thoughts they have no idea what's going on around them.
