I truely resent our society for being so male dominated. I have a daughter now, and I am bothered by the ways in which women are viewed and treated.

1) In children's movies, the lead characters are almost always male.
2) Organized religions are overtly sexist. Especially Judeo-Christian faiths.
3) No male Presidents elected in the USA.
4) Wage Gap between men and women.

These things bother me, and always have. Is it possible for a man to be a feminist?

Yep, you can call yourself a feminist, pro-feminist, equalist, humanist, if you want the best for your sons and daughters.

Here's a Dads and Daughters web site that is helpful, here is their mission statement:

Our mission is to Make the World Safe and Fair for Our Daughters: WE BELIEVE that all families benefit when active, engaged father-daughter relationships help girls grow--and when dads, daughters and others help overcome obstacles for girls and women. We are the world's only organization maximizing the power and potential of father-daughter relationships. We support fathers and stepfathers (no matter where they are) with tools to make a better life for every girl. http://www.dadsanddaughters.org/

Good luck!

You definitely could be a feminist. All a feminist is, is exactly what you listed in your question. Unfortunately, the term "feminist" has such a negative connotation that many people who think and act exactly like a feminist do not want to be called that. Well I think men and women can be feminists and I think that is great that you care about your daughter and want her to acheive all she can in the world and not to be held back just because of her gender.

Yes, plenty of men are feminist. Just make sure to really listen to women as much or more than you speak and you'll do fine.

It isn't just children's movies, but it's the funniest damn thing when animated movie about social insect colonies, which in real life are 90% female with any males as sperm donors, have casts made upwards of 70% male voice actors, with a male as the star. How's that happen? Ra ra equality.

your girl needs a father not a whiny doughboy asking permission to be a feminist

yes of course as a feminist just believes in equal rights and respect for women. It's very refreshing to have a man in this section who isn;t a woman hater! Welcome to the forum :-)

I personally consider myself an equalist, as we believe in equality for everyone, gender, race, age, disability etc.

a few things...

1) What Childrens movies are you watching ? When I saw Snow white, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Bambi, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast etc etc. the list goes on forever... I recall the lead character being Female...

2) Equal rights for women is new; Every accepted organized religion is not... So why would that surprise you ? The Catholic church has apologized before about things that occured over a 1,000 years ago... I wouldn't hold your breath on change happening too fast there... Perhaps in the year 3,000 they might admit to having mistreated women...

3) I'm guessing you meant no female Presidents elected in the USA; for one... the only candidate I recall ever running was Hilary Clinton for this upcoming election... you have to actually have a candidate to win; as well... women are the least likely to vote for women... this is not a sexism problem, or at least not one caused by men.

4) There is no evidence of a wage gap; I have seen surveys that suggests women make less or that women make more, depending on how you choose to view the facts. Most of them suggest that when the job is equal, the pay is equal. Women merely tend to do jobs that pay less...

Note: You would be for equal rights; that does not make you a feminist (which only represents female issues in terms of equal rights and does not address male issues of inequality)...

Of course a guy can be a feminist. You obviously are one already, because you can see the inequality in society and you reject it. It's great that you are considering how your daughter will fare in a sexist society.

Happy new year!!

Yes it is but it would be more like you were supporting the feminist organization. Just don't try burning someone's bra, they might get mad.
