My guess is #2.
Depends on what you call an English settlement. Trading post?
The culture of the native american tribes at the time was that members were loyal to their own tribe and were inclined to attack anyone from any group they considered to be a threat, which included anyone from other tribes. (Although the same could be said for the english, i suppose). This was going on for many centuries before whites even showed up on the continent. Anywhere where whites and native americans had contact on the frontier, there were attacks; both white on indian and indian on white.
Also, whites didn't completely stay out of the Ohio Valley just because they weren't supposed to be there. There were whites in the Ohio valley fairly early in the 1700's if you're counting mountain men, trappers, and traders.
So, by deduction, since they were there (at least some men were), and since attacks were the norm, I'd go with #2......but I don't know what your "book answer" expects. The year 1756 jumps out at me for the French and Indian war, but I'm not very sure on that.

the french and indian war ended in 1763 and there were no english settlements in the ohio valley until after that i would surmise you are referring to the battles led by tecumsehs brother the prophet which occurred about 1812 or so.
