if he's going to AA, they would tell him NO. "One glass doesn't hurt, so I'll just have another glass." Then next thing you know he's smashed. That is the problem with alcoholics, they don't know when to say no.
If he is in AA, then he needs to call his sponsor and talk to the sponsor.
Tell him that you don't support him drinking when he's trying to recover from alcoholism, but he is an adult and he has to make his own decisions. DO NOT give him dirty looks when he drinks. DO NOT make any comments about him drinking, this will only serve to make him defensive and then defiant--he may wind up drinking more than one glass.
DO stay sober yourself and make sure you have the keys to the car. DO join Al-Anon so you can get the support that YOU need.

Booze is poison to a drunk. If he is going to AA he needs to go to a meeting instead of dinner. If he's not in AA, then he's just playing games and he's not recovered anything.
Drunks are drunks, dry or not, they never ever stop being drunks. What he's doing is saying "I have control over the booze, I'm bigger than the booze, I'm stronger than the booze." Drunks do that until they realize they are powerless over booze. Forever.
You need to be in Alanon, regardless of what he does.

If you want to test if he really has recovered from being an alcoholic, then go for it.

WORMS. For an alcoholic...there is rarely anything like just one drink. I personally can ruin anything if I add alcohol. Good luck to you... remember that if HE drinks...you need to drive or find a designated driver. Good luck to you all.

He's dependent on a substance. No he shouldn't have so much as one. He has to learn to not look to alcohol for therapy, entertainment, or to make himself feel better. He has to deprive himself of this. He has to remove it from his lifestyle all together, it can't be an option anymore. You have to be his support, and we all know that you must be such a strong person for sticking by him through this. You get the brunt of it. Nor should you be drinking in front of him. Toast with a glass of juice, and may his and your new year be filled with change and improvement.
