The rock music of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and the 90s each has a specific and unique sound associated with them. With the current decade (of which, I'm not even certain what it should be called...the Oughts?), I don't get that sense. The current decade is both eclectic and synthetic, to me.

How would you personally define the music of the current decade? Happy New Year, Rock and Pop Peeps.

I'd say that there is no defined sound. If anything, the hiphop and pop cultures have dominated this decade more than any previous one by a long shot. Having said that though, I don't believe there has been a lack of good rock coming out for the last eight years. The way I look at it a lot of the rock I listen to wasn't really appreciated into much later after it was released. The Velvet Underground during their time inspired more bands than they seemed to have actual fans. The Ramones had nobody listening to them back in 1974. Even some of my favorites who have been around for about 2 decades now (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, etc.) get no love. There's great music coming out in the underground, it's just that the majority of people don't get the opportunity to listen to it.

Edit: And have a wonderful New Years!

Yeah ok, "white culture" is only one out of a population of 6 billion in the world who have a work ethic, use no government assistance and listen to live music. Free market doesn't even have anything to do with culture, its an economic system. Try stepping out of your "white culture", taking a trip to the post office, grab a passport, hop on a plane so you can see "other cultures" doing the exact same thing.

Yes, 2000-2008 has brought NOTHING new to the table. The record companies are only releasing bands/pop performers that are watered down copies of crap from the 1990's

It strikes me that the signature sound of a given decade is applied in hindsight: the seventies were the era of power trios as well as disco.

Note also that musical trends tend to lag a few years behind an actual 'decade' marker - the Seventies were pretty much still in full flower until '82 or '83, and the Nineties didn't really kick off until Nirvana became huge. We're right smack in the middle of this 'musical' decade.

So I'd say it's both synthetic and eclectic, and the sixties were both hippie hair bands and cheerful bubblegum Britpop.

Unfortunatly this might go down as the teenie bopper age thanks to Britnay, NSYNC, and all those other horrible "bands".

Unfortunately, I'd define it as the same ol' commercial redundancy...with a bit of innovation by a select few new bands, and a hell of a better Underground Sound than any new Mainstream fluff seems able to provide. ROCK ON UNDERGROUND...Happy New Year! Please...don't drink and drive.

I think today's music is hit a wall for now. I think a little bit of previous decades are coming back with all the modern technology. I see the 70s (minus disco) and a little bit of the 80s coming back into today's music.

Overall, I don't think that the 2000s decde have a signature sound
