For Indians, the dowry system plays a huge, but largely underground and illegal role in match-making, and forming of marriage alliances. The system of gift-giving has turned into a system of absurd demands, and one of harassment of women.
It is now common even in foreign countries. It is matter of social shame. Why why why?

very nice question you put up. well the ills of society play their role in every country maybe less or more but they do. dowry is'nt only because of the lack of literacy level it also prevails becuse of the rising needs and earning power. reporting dowry in many well reputed families is considered making a low image in the society and in poor and illiterate families there is not much awareness against it and if it is then they have much less choice as many families demand dowry and declining their demand will only lead to being single in poor families which is not at all accepted in them. they dont have the money to advertise in matrimonials so they have to face problems. dowry is not only a lone subject it also has links with other topics such as female foeticide ( girls are killed before being born) it is in our common knowledge how tough it is for the girl to survive in the world of poor . the single poor ladies are not allowed to make even a small cottage in slum areas not only because they are single but they dont have enough power in their hands so girls are still considered a burden and are married at a young age. there is no common solution to this problem . it is both the duty of govt and people to abolish it.

a brilliant question....for the poor parents of the girl...its a must in order their daughter be treated well for the rest of her life..(parents love for their children)..for those receiving the dowry...a)could be they too hv a daughter to marry off..b)they accept the dowry as a right because they spent so much money on the boy...so time to cash-in?.....c)they themselves are poor, and dowry is easy money?...for the middle classes...they have to in addition to the above reasons, prove their "place".in the society, and dare not let on that they are struggling.....middle class parents accepting such dowry could be nothing short of greed.
and for the rich...think greed only comes to mind...

I am an Indian living in India. There has been an article in The Hindu, an English Daily, stating the evil of dowry system is on the wane. The chief reason is the fact the girls these girls earn good money and are economically independent. Since the boys also get a lot of girls earning, they also do not feel compelled to demand dowry. It is possible that it is practiced and is not totally discarded. The only way this could be totally eradicated is for the girls all to be educated and economically empowered. That day is not far off.

Most of the reasons given existed since thousand of years. Why is dowry increasing now. I feel it is imbalance of work of husband and wife. Husband's family feels wife does not do much work. Earlier they had a lot of work to do like grinding grain, washing clothes all by hand. Also a few wives misuse the provisions of indian laws, make false accusations and get the husband's family arrested. Then they take a lot of money from the husband and agree to a divorce. Only a few wives do this blackmail, but the rate of dowry increases for all girls. The innocent wives suffer and a few rare cheating wives enjoy their husbands likd an ATM. Have you wondered why dowry is starting in Muslims after courts gave money for maintenace to Muslim wives?

Because people are greedy. What women and their parents can do is take a stand. They should not to agree to such marriages. It is better to be single than to be miserable, and miserable for what?

Dowry system itself is not bad. when a couple make a new house they need all type of utensils, bed, clothes and if they are gifted the initial things, they can start a happy married life without worrying for trival things
dowry is bad when people misuse it by asking for dowry and forcing girls parents to pay or give big things like car

If you don't demand something as dowry, you are looked as if you are not demanding dowary because you have some problem as far as groom and family is concerned. So you should demand dowry with reasonable care. Old timers introduced this system to express your love by gift giving. Although, many many has misconceptions and continue demanding even after marriage. So, you should ensure that girl is getting married into acceptable family by checking family background, relationship existing in society and status. This is because tradition, cultural practice and deeply rooted. What do you say?

for some its misplaced prestige.
for some its sheer arrogance.
for some its cultural practice.
for some more its tradition.
in some cases, the men demand it.
in some cases, the mothers ensure it.
in some cases, the ralatives snigger and trigger it.
in some more cases, the daughters create a shindig that enough wasnt given.
i have seen them all.
to those who dont bother - u may feel lonely, but great is your tribe.
