Personally Final Fantasy 8 is better than 7 to me. 7 is essentially a rehash of old ideas, particularly taken from 5+6, but Final Fantasy 8 really stands out uniquely amongst the series. It easily had the most customization out of any of the games until 10 came out.

If I was going to skip any Final Fantasy game it would be 9 which is easily the worst next to Mystic Quest and Crystal Chronicles IMO.

That's one of my favorite games of all time. In fact, the entire series is. The total length of the game is usually cited as approximately 40-50 hours. My first time took around 55 hours. I've also beat it in about 23 hours. The current record for completing the North American localization of the game is 5 hours and 26 minutes.

It all depends on if you spend time leveling up, and collecting rare items (in ANY Final Fantasy game), and I always think it's much more fun if you DO.

I played FFVI when it was known as FFIII in the U.S. The first time I played I maxed out the time counter (over 99 hours) Of course I maxed out all my levels/stats and magic. I love FFVI, sadly it was the last "Great" final fantasy. Don't get me wrong, the ones that followed were really good. Just not as cool as VI.

FFVIII was the worst FF ever made IMHO.

I can bet 6 in less then 30 hours I believe. Maybe even shorter.

You can beat the final boss(es) with only three party members.
