It could be the pinch protection open the sun roof and just do a visual check of the guild rails to see if anything is in there like leaves or twigs
if there's nothing there you can go to your dealer they have a lube for the sun roofs guide rails after a period of time they need to be lube just like anything else

sounds like you might have a sticking switch, may have spilled something on it

most likely the control switch is defective, however there is a relay that could have failed in the "open" position
check owners manual for fuse box location[s]* and fuse position list and with ign in on position and drivers door open,
close the roof and turn ign. off now go to proper fuse box and remove the fuse listed for the sunroof. this will keep it shut until proper repairs can be made.

* ml has multiple fuse boxes in several locations. the one containing the sunroof fuse should be under the hood.
Note: in order to purchase switch you may have to purchase entire dome lamp assembly.
