The definition of a circle is the plane figure whose circumference is everywhere equidistanct from its centre and also cirlce is a closed figure.((oxford Dictionary). If you make the circle half and we are calling it as semi circle by drawing an extra diameter to it. Really if we make the circle half we get half arc. The definition of arc is a part of the circumference of a circle. Examble if we break a bangle then we get half arc. My question is why to add diameter and call that thing as semi circle

because it is half of what is necessary to form a circle. two of them placed together form a circle ergo semicircle.

there is no point in calling a figure which is not closed , by a geometrical name. so diameter must be drawn.

i hope i am successful in clearing your doubt. good luck

So that everyone knows exactly what is being talked about. Language is inherently imprecise, so we want to be as accurate as possible so that is you want to ask about a semi-circle, you don't get answers about an arc. The former implies an enclosed area figure, the latter a bent line.

To prove language is very imprecise, ask 5 people what a "dog" is. We all know a dog when we see one, but when you say "dog" everyone visualizes something different. Try it, the answers will be as revealing as they are amusing.

Your question has the answer, it has to be a CLOSED figure.
to somplete the figure, we add the diameter.
does the broken bangle look like a semi-circle? no! its just an arc. you need to close it to get a semi-circle.

Thats because a semi circle makes an angle of 180* .All semi circles are arcs but all arcs are not semi cricles :P

First of all you need to understand what a circle is and what is an arc?? Circle is a closed figure where as arc is not closed. Arc joins two end points and has a curve, adding one line i.e. diameter turns it into a circle. Just a simple example to make you understand, why milk is milk and curd is curd, curd is prepared from milk just by adding of bacteria. Similarly, arc acted upon by a diameter, an extra component is added to turn it into a circle.
