You don't say if you have a laptop or a desk top model. Example, my Toshiba laptop gets very hot from being used for a long time, as the fan is very small. (There are times when the laptop is almost to hot to touch the bottom).
My desktop I built myself and has a very large fan in the processor. When I turn on the desktop the temp. is 15C. After long use, will the temp will never go above 39C and will cool down immediately.
I have an excellent software installed called, Active Smart, shareware. Will show you your HDD, name, serial #, performs a DX., for the HDD, in real time, will receive a pop up for any changes to the HDD, plus shows you the temp. on a graf, in real time. http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/?Launcher

Very hard question to answer, as you did not say how hot.
All computers will get hot when they run. They are consuming power, of which a significant amount is turned into heat.
Most computers will have temperature protection devices built in which will shut down the processor if it becomes to hot, to protect it. But this, just like tripping a breaker by overloading a circuit, will eventually take a toll on the life of the processor.
You should avoid running the computer in extremely hot locations.
Always keep clear room around the air vents to make sure the cooling fans can do their job.
If you suspect that a fan is not running, have it replaced immediately. Do not run the system without all the fans working.
If you think you are running to hot, you can add auxiliary fans to the system case, or a cooling plate to the bottom of a laptop. The cost will be little when compared to replacing your processor and memory if you cook them.

How hot is hot? It's normal for it to get warm to a certain degree. Most chips these days have thermal protection built into them, so if they get too hot, they'll just shut the system down before any damage occurs, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Clean the fans inside your case and make sure it's free from dust and all will be ok.
