I have seen quite a few snakes, and I live in Utah, USA. Many while hiking, including quite a few rattlesnakes. I have also seen other non-poisonous snakes in areas near ditches and canals, and even a few while walking in my neighborhood. In schools there are outreach programs that bring snakes and other animals for the children to see. I have seen a few here, at pet stores and zoos. There is generally nothing to worry about, you treat them with respect, and they will do the same.
