It's about two kids- one rich and the other poor. I'm not sure about their ages. Anyway, i think the poor one is shocked that the rich kid befriended him/her.

Could it be A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett?. The title character, Sara, befriends the servant girl at a boarding school.
