Primarily to make money.
As a side effect, it showed the difference in tennis from the 90s to now. The courts have considerably slowed down, such that Federer had a ridiculously hard time returning Sampras's serve in the last 2 matches played on faster surfaces.

Sampras just wanted to see how he would match up against Federer the outcome was enevitable. If sampras was in his prime it would have been a good match.

2 things.....most importantly it was for the money.....and next it
was for people wanted or have asked what if.....
Bottom line it was all $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ baby.....
The sound of $$$$ makes even a dead-man awake.
For people who want comparison, no one will get a
satisfactory answer. Both were great competitors and
players who happen to be great at their own time.....
You cannot roll back the time and ask "what if" ....it is waste
of time....
All Federer needs to prove any of his critics is to win French
open and get over the 14+ slams...

Did you notice where the events were held? All Asian venues in hopes of generating more interest, sponsorship opportunities and of course cash. Roger did not take this seriously and why should he wanted to put on a show and he did that. If he wanted to win he would have crushed Pete and nobody wants to see that (I wouldn't pay thousands of dollars to see a 6-0 6-1 match)

very true..
it was just for the organisers and the tennis federation to generate more money into the game... after all, they knew that there would be a lot of interest in how the 2 greatest players of the recent past play against each other.
Federer was just too tired and exhausted after a long season and so he was hardly interested in the match and hence was walking at turtle pace as u mentioned..
