First of all, I think It is not fair of him to ask such a thing. Second, in a life and death situation you don't think, you just act and act fast, or it is too late. So you help the one who is closest and when you save him you help another one.

And this was from experience as I was many times in life and death situation - five years in the frontlines during the war in my country.

How likely is it going to happen? Tell him/her that you would attempt to save them both, but if it had to be a choice, the situation would dictate who you would save and still come out alive yourself. Then tell him/her you will write a good speech for the one who didn't make it, only mentioning the good things they had done, and not their concern for who you liked most. Love and friendship should not be placed on scales like pieces of meat.

Since future generations are at stake, in such a situation you should choose the most beautiful, strong, intelligent and healthy person, in order to safeguard the well being of the human race.
