I'm gonna tell you the way my Contemporary-Issues teacher told us... This was used to tell why thieves got their right hand cut off...
In some cultures (I don't know if they still do this) you eat with your right hand, and "clean up" with your left... If you went to the bathroom and there was NO SUCH THING as toilet paper... What sort of options would you have?? The answer... Your left hand. That's right. And then they'd clean off the hand. SO, when someone stole something, their right hand gets cut off, and they have to eat from their left... SO, if someone from that culture came up to you and only had one hand (the left), would you shake his hand? ha ha...

because toilet paper in many countries is only available to the rich, so everyone uses they're left hand to wipe and their right for everything else. even though they wash their hands it is still considered unclean

It depends on the culture, but going back to the latin roots, the left hand and lefties were considered to be evilas they were not the norm. To the extent that left in latin based languages still have the "sinista" root. Even in english, we have left and right, which implies that left is wrong. Many also believe since it is the hand used most often to clean your backside, that it is dirty.
