maths problem...?

im having my front room tiled after the new year and was wondering how many tiles i will need:

size of frontroom is 21ft long by 11ft 2", the tiles are 1ft by 1ft square...how many tiles will i need?

Exact answer is 234.5 tiles But You can take it approx. 235 tiles.
Actually 231(21*11) tiles used will be complete or unbroken.
For the remaining area (21*1/6 feet^2)
tiles used are 21 *1/6 = 3.5 tiles.
And these tles can be cut with a cutter such that theier length is 1 feet and the breadth is 2 inches.There will be 21 such rectangular tiles.


Trust me I have seen tiles being cut.

As each tile is squire in shape, hence you may use it lengthwise or breadth wise. Let's arrange them length wise.

There will be 11 full rows with 21 tiles in each row plus one row
with 21 tiles each cut to 12"x 1". Thus total number of tiles required will be = ( 21 x 11 ) + ( 21 tiles cut to 12"x 1" size)
ie the required number of tiles = 231 + 21 = 252

But 21 cut-pieces of (12"x1") will be left unused.

I assume you will be able to cut the tiles 2" x 1' ( 2 inches by 12 inches) Hence you will need 21 x 11 = 231 + 2" by 12 " 21 pieces which can be obtained from ( we get 6 from one 12" by 12" tile) 3 full tile and one partial tile . Total 4
Therefore you will need to buy minimum 235 tiles. You will have spare 3 pieces of 2" by 12" tiles.
