My husband wants to start wearing a tie more often at work. We both have no clue on that subject. What are the basics one needs to keep in mind while shopping for ties - there are so many in different colors, patterns and different fabrics, too.
For example can one wear a striped tie when the suit fabric also has a stripey pattern? What are big 'no-nos' concerning ties? Does one need to wear a jacket while wearing a tie or is it also acceptable to only wear shirt and tie or shirt, sweater and tie? Which color schemes work well with dark shirts, which with light colored shirts? What pattern of tie goes with a striped shirt? Any advice?

A good idea would be for him to, among other things, take note of how the other guys he works with wear theirs.

Every area/field has it's own ettiquet. There are many websites that give tips on neckties, thought at times they are quite conflicting.

If you have a Men's Wearhouse, near you, I suggest he go and tell them he needs basic help.

Often a basic knot allot of guys use is the 4 in hand. It doesn't always look great, but is easy enough to do.

I prefer the half windsor, it is easy, once you get used to it, and is rather tidy. Here is a helpful link:http://www.how-to-tie-a-tie-video.com/half-windsor-tie-knot.html

Many feel that if wearing a tie, a guys top button should be buttoned, I agree, though sometimes it is too tight having the top one buttoned.

I hope this helps. You can contact me for any questions you or he have.

Glad to hear your husbands choice to wear a tie for work- not so many compnaies or people bother these days.
A stripe with a non-bold stripe in suit is Ok - go with small patterns, nothing too loud - instead of a sweater try a waistcoat (vest) it dresses up an outfit even more.
Also try french cuff dress shirts - a nice pair of cufflinks, matching the tie, would look awesome - they have been selling toes and cufflink sets in some of the high street stores- boxed ready to go.

Ties usually have the same theme as the suit(or jacket, or whatever your wearing for a top). So if your weaing a black shirt, wear a silver(or white) tie, just anything that would make him look good(in my opinion)

Simple first. Stripes, solids are easy to pair up.

Maybe a conservative animal tie, with like little dogs or goats or something on the tie.
