Depends. ATI or Geforce?
the 8800 GTX has 610 mhz as it's core clock
and the 2900xt from ATI has 740mhz

but hte architecture of the video card processors are different, meaning you can't compare clock to clock between the 2 companies.

for "extreme" gaming. you want the following

8800 GT G92
8800 GTS 512mb
8800 GTX
8800 Ultra

I am not too familiar with ATI so i will jsut state the Geforce series cards. basically anything with 88 in front or higher is good

Most current cards now run at 550 - 800mHz. BUT high clock speed coupled with lean GPU architecture (16 Stream Processors only) still translates to slow gaming performance. Cards with robust GPU (112 SPs or higher) are the real performers.

It depends on your use.

Clock speed doesn't necessarily translate to fps.
