Both cars are based on the same platform (chasis). The 3000gt vr-4 is more powerful since it has a v6 turbo.
I think 1999 is the last year that car was sold in North America. The Dodge Stealth is the same car.
I would consider buying the 1994+ 3000gt vr4. Try finding one that doesn't have tunable exhaust, adjustable suspension & adjustable wing. These were removed post 1995, these are consider gadgets with no real performance advantage. Besides, if you are going to mod your car anyways, these features would have to be deactivated anyways. Also starting in 1994 the vr4 has a slight increase in torque & horsepower due to higher boost. 94+ vr4's also has a 6spd.
If you can find one ... there's a spyder vr4 for 95-96 with retractable hardtop. This would be at the top of my list.
If the price is similar I would get the vr4 instead of the eclipse because:
- vr4 are higher performance (performs as well as a corvette)
- uses v6 twin turbo, no turbo lag
- much more rare than the eclipse
- uses a more sophisticated awd system than the eclipse. vr4 is a true all time awd while the eclipse is mostly a front wheel drive and sends power to rear wheels only when necessary.
Hope this helps, good luck.

eclipse is cheap and fast and fun to drive. Easy to cutomize also. Just avoid the convertible , they leak in my experience. Also get a five speed, the auto I drove was a dog.

1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse, Black with sunroof, 5 speed...I totally love the older eclipses... they newer ones look like family cars....
You can do a lot with the older cars, plus it is a good feeling when you fix them and make them like new.

Try to find a second gen(95-99) eclipse gst or gsx. They are both quick being supercharged and the gsx is even awd. They are reasonable priced also.
