Dear All,
we have a tremendous ant problem in our house. Have you encountered any effective solutions (either pest control products or services) that decisively reduced the infestation? The situation is so severe that I can see ants crawling on everything...( at least 5 on each table) and sometimes I would find ants crawling on my skill and my neck without realizing...help...

treatment can depend on what type of ant you dealing with...some ants like sugars...some like proterins (grease, peanut butter) you will want to use a bait for the foraging ants inside, they will carry the bait to the rest of the colony. results can vary from a few days to weeks....If you spray them with an insecticide you will only be killing a small fraction of the colony and with some ants you will just spread them about. A good "all around" gel bait the home owner can get is Terro found at hardware and grocery stores. if you can find the trailing ants outside and get the colony itself a general insecticide will get rid of the whole colony
Lisa... Boric Acid (assuming you mean the dust) is considered to be low toxic, but still will be many more times more toxic than any finished product you can buy over the counter or what an exterminator would use along with it is a slow acting poison that can also act as a repellent, not really killing them out but just moving them to another area

Getting rid of ants begins with what causes them to get in your house. In pest control we call that eliminating conditions conducive to ants. Depending on what species of ants it is. But the most common conditions that attract ants in your house is :
Food sources
excessive Moisture
Earth to wood contact
vegetation touching the building

I highly recommend TERRO which is a liquid solution that is relatively inexpensive and can be purchase at most hardware or farm supply stores. Just follow the instruction on the label and within a week your ant problem should be gone. However, make sure that you place the recommended treatment out of the reach of children and animals. I live in a very rural area and ants are a seasonal problem most every year but the TERRO always works.

There are a lot of ways you can reduce an ant infestation, and most of them are low to non-toxic! It sounds like you may need some long-term and short-term (ant emergency!) plans and ways to deal with the ants...
First of all, you probably need to get the queen and the nest! The scouts are what are wandering around on everything, making their little chemical trails everywhere they go, so that they can trace it later if they find the goods (food!). You gotta get rid of that! You can vacuum or wipe up the ants, then you need to wipe up any trails. You can also see if you can trace where the ants are coming from and plug that hole.
Additionally, longer term solutions should include baits! They are a very small amount of pesticide in a container that is taken back to the nest where it KILLS the queen and the nest. Good thing as far as ant control goes.
Anywho, I could wax eloquent about the control of ants without using sprays, but what I think would be best would be to check out this wonderful website http://ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/menu.house.html . It is from the University of California, Davis and so geared towards Californians, but ants are ants in general. The website will also give you enough information if you do end up hiring someone. Insecticides with Pyrethin (organic) work well on ants and are safe for inside. Use a lawn insecticide around the perimeter of the house.

Call a meeting and tell all the ants that they will have to leave! If they don't then piss along the walls of your house and mark your territory! Or you can call Dale who lves next door to Hank Hill! And last but not least Buy an ant eater

Use boric acid.Boric acid is poisonous to ants acting on their exoskeleton, and is not harmful to human beings.

Get an exterminator. Also I heard about spreading lavender around the inside and outside of your house. Don't quote me on that but I would look it up.

this place has crazy ants to. thank you military. i use this bleach spray sruff and it works wonders.
