The ideal humidity in a home is about 40%. Under 30% will cause furniture to crack and your nasal passages to dry out. Over 50% will increase the growth of mold.

Dehumidifier's take the moisture out. They are put in basements in the summer only to remove the moisture.
Dampness contributes to mold and that's one thing you truly want to avoid. Mold can cause a lot of problems, especially to your health. Most molds you can't get rid of.

In the winter you don't need to run the dehumidifier, because now the furnace is on and the basement vents are open to keep the basement dry because of the heat.

They do play an important part in keeping your basement dry.

Dehumidifiers are for removing unwanted moisture. A dehumidifer is used differently and in various sizes depending on the place, the space, and your weather. Here are to extremely different climates as example.

In Washington State homes have a lot of underground water and some homes can actually grow moss on typewriter ribbons if the house is not heated and vented correctly. You need air circulation first and if very cold, some low heat.

In Florida the humidity is in the air and air circulation is needed so things do not get so damp that they get black mold. When closing up my home in Florida for a vacation or travel... I keep ceiling fans going besides setting my air conditioner.

Dehumidifers work good when in a unit that circulates air and extracts moisture in the air where it can be pour out. You can get tubs of chemicals that pull moisture out of the air for small places that are closed up.. such as closets or under sinks.

Again, air circulation is best. Keep furniture away from walls so they don't create an area that traps moisture and doesn't let air keep it dry. Works in all climates

If you live in a climate where you put up heavy drapes to hold in the heat at your windows (metal frames windows make it even worse). Be sure to open the drapes during warmer times of the day to let the air dry around the window.

Always keep air circulation in mind and this will keep you home and things from getting water stains. Mold is not the only problem.

In Florida, air conditioners do a lot to control humidity in hot weather.

In Washington State, air circulation works and you can use very small fans to move the warm heated air during winter to keep moisture from building up. If you have to save money and you don't have heat... you need to air your rooms out daily.

Florida gets a lot of mold from moisture. Washington you get water stains on wood, material; warping of wood; and you can get black mold.

It all depends on where you live. If your home is vented, if you have air circulation and if you have extreme weather.

The Advantage is to use a dehumidifier IF your situation requires it to protect your wood, material, furniture from damage.
