Does anyone know why they had 8 games in the 72' summit series between the soviets and canada, instead of a best 4 out of seven series.

The intent was to have 4 games in Canada and 4 in Russia. It wouldn't have been fair to the Russians to come to Canada for the first 4 games and then only have 3 back in Russia.

It wasn't a contest

It was an 8 game series giving each country's best players a chance to play against one another.

There was no trophy
There was very little financial compensation
It was all about pride

It was supposed to be a friendly series. Four games were planned in both countries from the onset. It was expected the results for that series would be more like the recent Junior series but, Canada got a severe wakeup call in Montreal even after they were up 2 goals and it turned into some very intense hockey.
When it was over Russia tried to claim they won because they scored more goals in the series. Canada however won more games.

It was the tie breaker. if you look back at the records it shows that the third game came up to be a 4-4 tie between the two teams in which an 8th game had to be played to determine the winner.
