The Flintstones aired from 1960-1966, when the Civil Rights Movement was the strongest (I think) thus most everything was segregated.

Flintstone Characters

The Flintstones was one of my favorite cartoons when I was a child and I distinctly remember a black character named 'Elmo Blackbottom", not trying to be funny, but from time to time I do a Google search and find nothing on him. I believe what's going on here in 2014 is some revision of history. There is an episode in which Fred has a rope and is chasing people from space and he calls out all the names of his co-workers because he thinks they are playing a prank on him and he might call out Elmo Blackbottom during this but I'm positive about this character at 51 I am not yet hallucinating. If anybody has a better way to search thoroughly I bet you'll find this character.

Some of you guys are hilarious, in your opinions.
ALL black people know why there were no black people in either the Flintstones (the past) NOR the Jetsons (the future). It was American racism of the time. Thank goodness for Johnny Quest's Haji! He was cartoon's Jackie Robinson.

The Cosby Shows always had multiracial casts. Remember all of the cute kids, visiting Rudy from school & the neighborhood? They existed in the Universe Cosby.

It was made in the sixties.... so either racism... or the fact that scienctist thing that early peoples migrated from china to america... But since this wasn't found out untill like 1990... i would say racism....

Humans hadn't evolved very far by that point, that's why you don't see any of the more advanced races in shows like the Flintstones.

I never thot of that
Cuz its old and racist.
Plus it kinda make sense for cave people to be segregated seeing as different populations wouldn't have immersed in the stone ages.

Really, it's because there weren't black characters in "The Honeymooners." "The Flinstones" was stolen from that show.

The writers for the show were unable to find a suitable last name that had a geology/black cultured base to it.
