We made lye soap all the time at my great grandma's house. That big black pot and it boiling, had a paddle in it stirring it so that it would mix all the ingredients in it. Then after it was done, pour the liquid in the wooden frame that was built for the soap. Let it cool down a bit and then cut it into blocks. We still have that pot to this day. It is setting right outside of my door.

Wow, we used a scrub board too. Still have a few of those around too. This makes me want to start using all that stuff again.

That's neat that you still have the black pot.

When I was young, everyone I knew made lye soap.

I was very surprised, when I married in 1957 and discovered that my mother-in-law, still made lye soap for her wash.

She had the whitest clothes I had ever seen.

She also had a scrub board, that she used on her cloths.

When I ws 6 my grandma had been piecing a quilt for me for years, once it was finished she could no longer use her fingers well enough to quilit it. There was a little old lady next door to us, she agreed to finish my quilt and I would go to her home every morning before school and thread needles for her and the same after school so she could quilt. She was always making a small batch of lye soap. My son climbed a hill at his step grandpa's house after being told not to and it was covered with poison ivy. His new grandpa grabbed on to him and scrubbed him up good with lye soap and he never broke out at all. He was 6 then and now he is 42 and still remembers that scrubbing with the lye soap.

I remember all right we got off the school bus, ma was laying down reading her true story and I thought oh something good for supper tonight ,so I tasted it. It wasn't supper, so I didn't tell the other kids what I had done while they were out side doing their chores I wasn't stingy I let them sample it to, after that and trying the raccoon cooking another time I didn't sneak no more

Made it few times to give as gifts. It took 2 weeks to cure before you could use it on your skin. We always used the lye to clean & soak the stove parts to get them clean. In the days before oven cleaners! OUCH!
I still have the scars to prove it!

I'd bet lye soap is still around, though it mightn't be.

People could make it again easily enough except for the hog lard.
