Quite sad to note that many replies don't know that The United Kingdom is a democracy! Our form of government, Constitutional Monarchy, one of the world's oldest,
is democratic.
Not interested in what america has or does not have.

It was Gordon Brown who kept us out of the euro. What was his motivation? God knows but it's a good job eh? Re the euro, I don't suppose many people thought through what it meant in real life, but the politicians should have. What else are they for? It was never going to work when there were so many different economies with their different problems was it? Edit: To Andrew. All the banking systems were corrupt not archaic, because of deregulation. They gave loans to people who they knew couldn't pay and sold the bad debts on to other banks worldwide, because every time they sold they made bonuses. Then they bet against them being able to pay back. They bet that debts they themselselves fraudelently sold as good would default. So they could make more money in bonuses. The insurance companies were in on it too that's why AIG ran out of money. Also the ratings systems. They gave Lehmans a AA rating just before it went bankrupt. It was all just a gigantic pyramid type of scheme. And they've all kept their massive bonuses. Nice. If I tried anything like that I would justifiably be prosecuted for fraud. And it was all the bankers worldwide. Greed is catching. As to the economy of Ireland, you can't get rich just by building houses for each other, it's a bubble which will eventually burst. And yes I know Ireland had other industries, I'm not knocking Ireland at all.

Ireland does not have a King or Queen for the same reason America doesn't. They are both Republics. The UK is a constitutional monarchy because so far they haven't voted to get rid of royal family. The UK, Ireland and the US are all democracies. It seems some of your other respondants are confusing the word "democracy" with the word "republic."

Ireland hasn't had kings and queens for hundreds of years (when they still had tribes). The UK's monarchy is ceremonial/traditional. They have a parliamentary government with a Prime Minister in charge.
America's govt. was created by people who were irritated by the actions of England's King. Therefore, the last thing they wanted to create was another monarchy.

Ireland is a Republic, it has no King or Queen.
The UK has a Queen. Its just part of our culture. We have never changed from a Monarchy to a Republic.
America was established as a Republic and never had a Monarchy.
