Dear asker as it's known that insomnia sufferers complain of not being able to relax physically and mentally enough to sleep. this is in general. let's go step after step with simple and hopefully helpful tips that i wish can help you sovling you insomnia:
First of all the best thing to do is to obeserve the underlying cause(s) of insomnia, so as you have said, you are working on diff shifts ,night/day, which is one of the most unpathlogical reason introduces Insomnia. you can help a lil in sloving this side of your insomniac problem by sleeping short naps during the day after a night shift, so your body don't use to sleep a long periods during day llight, the second tip is to be active when you are awake as working out, be socialy active...etc It’s important to exercise the mind and body in the day. this can often have a sedating effect on the mind and body and help you gain deeper sleep. in the other hand try to be as relaxed as possible in the day and don’t let stress, anxiety and worry get the better of you. Avoid stimulants like caffeine and cigarettes in the day. Caffeine may give you an initial boost, however it is short-lived and will more than likely affect your sleep as caffeine stays in the body for more than 5 hours. Try drinking a calming drink such as chamomile tea or warm but low sweetend milk...etc
also it's proved that it's important pay attention to your diet and ensure that you are taking a quality supplement containing calcium and magnesium which help in regulating the muscles and nerves' actions.
when you are working a day shift after coing back home, taking a warm shower, having a good healthy meal at 6 pm and interactive with your family/friends help removing depression and anxiety that you may gained during work or for any other reason... try to enjoy your time before the bed time so you can be emotinoaly and mentaly relaxed and satisfied. It’s important to exercise the mind and body in the day, this can often have a sedating effect on the mind and body and help you gain deeper sleep. ensure that you expose yourself to light (preferably natural) in the day and wind down in the evenings before sleep. Try meditation in the evenings and listen to relaxing music.
also it's very helpful and important to prepare an appropriate environment in your bed room as that your bedroom is be cool, quiet and dark, and that your bed is comfortable and supportive. When you are in bed try progressive relaxation and focus your attention on relaxing your body from your head to your toe.
Finaly be aware that sleeping pills do not tackle the underlying cause of insomnia and you will not obtain the same benefits of natural sleep. This is because the chemicals found in most major sleeping pills affect normal brainwave patterns and inhibit the brain from falling into the deeper restorative stages of sleep.
Sleep is a bless so enoy it as much you can, it's important for body and mental helath and it's neccessry to start a new happy and productive day after good and enough sleeping hours at the night before.
in case you you can't solve it better to seek further specialist medical advise immediately so you can enjoy and get benifet of normal sleep soon ;)
good luck and happy new year :)

Ive dealt with insomnia several times before. Honestly the best thing I have come across is going to see a doctor and getting perscribed ambien. If i was having a problem with insomnia all i would have to do is take one ambien and it worked like magic and i slept good for weeks after that. There is also herbal sleeping pills you can take but I recommend ambien.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net
Ohhh..and Good Luck!

1 word.... Valerian! Try this in capsule or tincture form. This is an herbal remedy used for relaxation and restlessness. I recommend the capsule form as the tincture has a bit of an offensive scent. Its over the counter at the drugstore and non-habit forming.

Have a glass of wine. That knocks me out when I can't fall asleep and doesn't have the dangerous side effects of sleeping pills which can get addictive too.
