Do you agree that these would be the effects?

Also, do you think that's the reason we'll never have one?

Uh, Big Scott... that article has nothing to do with Viet Nam.. All it says is that the citizens of the U.S. wouldn't go for it... did you read it?

And by the way, I wrote it. I'm also a Soldier in the United States Army who has served in Iraq for many, many months.

Pandemonium maybe. Protests possible. Not sure how a drafted person would fight though under impression it would be different from conscription which is something different.Conscription while not mentoned in the article is similiar to what described in the article. More pandemonium would occur from conscription which is to grab available people from anywhere and force them to become soldiers. Draft as understood a person receives a message and a person can still escape it unlike conscription. If what has been in the news about mercenaries is correct instead of a draft it could be mercenary recruiters could recruit more people to become mercenaries and avoid the need for a draft.

I don't get the sense that the majority of draft-age men in the US are politically engaged, and I think it would take quite a while for them to get engaged, get organized, and stage even one protest if there was ever a new draft. I don't agree with you that the US never have one. I think if a US ally has a crisis, and there is a need to go to their aid, the US will have to institute a draft to do it, and as thin as the military is stretched right now, they would be drafting everyone from 7th grade to age 70 to make the quota in that case!

When we had previous drafts it was because we needed millions of troops to fight multiple countries at once. If we go to war with China, then I could see a draft. Otherwise, its not going to happen.
Whoever wrote that article is an idiot. All they're doing is comparing it to Vietnam and Iraq is so much different. For one thing in Vietnam, you did one tour and that was it. In Iraq, men are volunteering for 4th and 5th tours.

I think there are a number of reasons the draft will never be re-instated. Here are some of them:

1. It does not have a lot of popular public support
2. In order to avoid discrimination, women would also have to be drafted and too many people still don't like the idea of women being drafted.
3. The military can (for the most part) meet its recruitment quotas by offering bonuses to people who can most benefit economically and financially from military service.
4. The military has also been able to get new recruits by raising age limits and lowering their standards for who can serve.
5. Wealthier families don't have the National Guard where they can use their connections to keep their own family members out of combat like they did during the Vietnam War.

I know there are other reasons for not having the draft but these are the main ones I can think of right now.
