I have a good knowledge of Egypt's ancient history, & it all due to a wonderful teacher i had in secondary school in England. She hooked me & made it all seem so real, alive even. As i got older, i read all i could, visited, & even lived in this interesting place.
YES i would advocate more teaching about Egypt, but more than that, i would ask all teachers to bring any subject to life like that; Kids would learn more if this happened.
My husband is Egyptian, & sad to say his education especially about his own countries history is not good, but i have enjoyed teaching him to be proud of his heratage (no patronage meant here)
Good question Sistablu, & Happy New Year to you.

I actually wish I knew more about both ancient and modern history of Egypt. You won't believe the amount of useless crap I had memorized as a kid in school ... now it all threw one of kalooka's poof bombs and has gone with the wind ... with the chocolate illy sa7it and ra7it matra7 ma ra7it! All those long nights before exams memorizing names and dates and numbers ... and what do I have to show for it? Absolutely nothing! My early Alzheimer has wiped out what little is left of my brain ... pathetic isn't it? Maybe you can reintroduce me to all those lost facts on the roof where we will be sitting together ISA with you know who waiting on us after carrying us up the stairs! It would be convenient to have a whipping boy too! hehehehe

Im still learning school gave us only 50% so the rest we need to descover it through reading and searching
the fact that school teaches only few about history is to our mind should learn also scinece and maths not only history but teachers should encourage us to read about history to make us love history yes coz if u dont love history u cant study it never by imposing it on student
so let em love and appreciat to read about their ancestors and understand that secret of being great through reading volutarily history

If you asked this question about 8-10 years ago, I would say yes (for an American). However, I was taking classes on the subject in college as part of my non-Western history requirements. In a course at my current university, a professor starts her lectures on legal traditions in Ancient Egypt. We also have a person who specializes in Egypt (culture and politics) on staff.
I do remember that around the 3rd grade our class trip was to Penn's Egyptian Museum, we knew about mummies and so forth before and had a "lecture" during our trip. The museum is still a popular place for class trips. Also, while it is in present day Iraq/Iran and not Egypt, I also remember having to research and build a ziggurat. Considering how many cultures American kids have to learn about (Mayans, Incas, Aztecs, Spanish, Native Americans, Europeans, Asian, African, etc.) the time spent on Ancient Egypt is about right.
However ... I think they need to spend more time on on Modern and Early Modern history. We learning about the Kingdoms, pyramids, and king Tut. Napoleons Invasion and the Rosetta stone. Then, we hear about the Suez Canal Crisis and somewhat about current Egypt (or the Middle East). We skip over the Turkish/Ottoman, English, and French involvement and how Egypt came to be an Arab country, etc.

No, I can't say that I do, but I do have some knowledge of it. Should the schools teach more about it...I'm not sure, at least in my country. There are so many topics to cover during the short time in school that an overview at that level is about all there is time for. Hopefully, a student will get enough of an understanding in school to want to go out and pursue more independent study outside of class.
