If you're on the pill and your periods have gotten so light that nearly nothing comes out anymore, that's okay.
If you're not on the pill, it is NOT okay to go 6 months without a period. The reason is that it's possible you're being exposed to estrogen without progesterone, which increases your risk of breast and endometrial cancer down the road. Go see your gynecologist.

It has been 4 months for me without a period. I saw my Dr for other issues and she did blood work and a pregnancy test. All were fine.
She told me to make the appt for my yearly "women" exam and we will further discuss it then.
I agree that you should see your Dr.
I have gone a year without a period in the past and their is no explanation as to why.
I am 29 years old.

What is her age? She could be menopausal. Is she a hard training athlete? Are there any health problems?
It is not necessarily unsafe, but it would be a good idea for her to see a doctor for an evaluation.

Sometimes this could indicate an overall health problem-- if an individual is undernourished for her level of activity, for example, her body will use the nourishment for her other body systems (circulatory, respiratory, etc.) before it will fuel her reproductive system.

On her own or by using birth control? If it's on her own, I'd personally want to get checked out just to make sure there isn't anything wrong.

It's not that healthy really, you might have PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome) and should get checked out.
