Your suggestions above are quite appropriate. They'll love you all the more for it.
Thanks for your kind thoughts to these wonderful neighbors.

Unless you know of some perfect way to reciprocate with
a chore you can do for them, I think giving them a free meal
out at a family restaurant would be something they'ed enjoy.
Especially, if they are on a restricted budget as the majority
of seniors are today. And meals out may be a special treat
they can't often splurge for. Maybe they'ed like to go out to breakfast sometime, rather than dinner. And you can make that possible with a gift card from that restaurant. I remember
doing the good neighbor thing for a couple away for a month.
That included mowing their front and back yards, watering
indoor plants, and getting their mail. And instead of giving
me a true reward for my hard work each week, they gave me
a piece of glazed pottery that I had seen in their living room
several times. I felt so used. And it wasn't that I expected a
great gift. But knowing it was not worth their while to give me
something to show their appreciation really upset me. I
couldn't even bear to talk to them when we were moving at
the end of summer and they'ed returned. She made a point
to come over, seeing we were moving, and wanted to know
if she'd done something wrong. So I told her how my feelings
had been hurt, and that I had assumed they'ed be fair with
me, and they weren't. And she told me I should have stipulated that I'd wanted to be paid. I assured her, it wasn't
the money I was after. But if they were going to give me a
present, it should at least, be new. She tried to weasel out
of that one. But she knew I was right, after all. To me, it was
as if I'd been slapped across the face with that insult. That
episode has bothered me for years. I hate to be taken ad-
vantage of. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

A gift card is a good idea, put in a thank you card. As well as a restaurant, you could also consider the grocery, drug, discount store they use, so they can buy something they may want or need. They sound very nice and you are so considerate to want to do something for them too.---Luvs

I take care of many of my neighbor's houses and pets when they vacation. Even though I never expect anything in return, it's always nice when they bring a small souvenir back from their destination. Usually all that is needed is a thank you. If you see something that you can do for them later, I'm sure that they would appreciate it.

Give them a fruit basket with some nice spreadable cheese, crackers and some summer sausage.
And a nice thank you note.
My husband cleans the snow on our neighbors walks, while they go south for the winter.
They gave us that same gift last year and we truly enjoyed it.

Shovel their snow for them, put rock salt out when it's going to freeze overnight, clean off their car in the morning, little things like that - it means a lot more than buying a gift. Take them a casserole & stay long enough to share it with them. :)

The same as you'd do for a younger couple under the same circumstances. The key is to let them know you appreciated their assistance.

I think a gift card inside a thank you card would be best. New age, new thinking. they will know best what would be good for them. Candy and flowers are so yesterday. Signed, old goat with a young mind.

My brother had elderly neighbors that were wonderful, they would watch his house for him and in return whenever he made a loaf of bread or pie ( his favorite things to bake) he would make 2 and trot next door with it piping hot and give them one. They were always so happy when he came, and then he would visit for a while and chat too.
