When flight planning, pilots look at the SIGMET maps, the Significant Meteorological data. If it says: WX NIL, it means; no weather. That is; no weather significant for a pilot. What is significant and the cause of delays at airports is e.g. freezing fog (FZFG). Airports can also be closed due to strong shear-winds (SW). Thunderstorms and tornadoes are usually are very local and moving, thus only creating small delays. When in flight at FL 330 (33,000 ft) airliners are not affected by those. But the controllers (ATC) might divert them around such weather for the peace of mind of the passengers.
