Man, some of these answerers are stupid as hell. Th film ratings arent a law. Its a voluntary guideline to help parents. Most theaters voluntarily agree to not let minors into R movies to keep parents happy. Its not illegal to watch an R movie if your under 17.
Now as for your parents. Honetly, there is no way to convince them. Just deal with it.

First of all, I'm 23. I used to be 14 and thought similarly to how you feel. However, being older I can see my parents concern. First, by law you need to be 17 to watch a rated R movie in the theater. They ID you and won't let you buy a ticket if your aren't 17. Most R movies are inappropriate for a 14 year old. I think thats ridiculous that 'the majority' of your friends are allowed to see R movies, especially todays R movies. Todays R movies are far worse than the R movies from 15 years ago. If they really are watching R movies I'd hope they're at least movies their parents have pre-screened so they know what their kids are watching The biggest concern I think is the sexual content. R movies are either too violent, bad language, or too much sexual content. I don't think a 14 year old is going to start shooing people cuz they watched a movie, but they are going to swear more and are definitely more likely to be open to sexual influence which is probably the biggest concern of any parent.

My parents were sticklers for the age limits and I didn't see R rated movies until i was 17. not to say that I didn't sneak a few in there like the Matrix beforehand:) You really aren't missing out all that much. If you are 14 then all the movies you want to watch shouldn't be R and you can live without the few that are R.

If you're trying to go and see one at the cinema, they probably won't let you in, or if you want to rent a DVD. They'll ask for id, or at least they should.
If your friends are watching them, their parents are probably renting the DVDs for them. It's their choice.
R rated movies contain stuff that is too much to handle for some young viewers, who are sensitive or lead very sheltered lives, so the makers of those film have to restrict the viewing to all young viewers to cover their backs. Because they could be sued by someone who's kid was traumatised by watching a violent or sexually explicit movie if they just let anyone watch it.
It's a legal thing.

It's up to the parents.
Movies are rated R usually because of extreme violence or because of sexually scenes, nudity, or because of sex jokes/talk.
Most parents don't want their 14 year old child to watch those kinds of things.
However, there are some really great movies that are acceptable for kids to watch that are rated R.
At home, its your parents decisiion.
At theatres, you have to be seventeen or they won't let you in. UNLESS a parent is with you.

14 year olds can watch R rated films as long as their parents allow them to. A lot of time the movies contain adult content and language, and parents don't want their children exposed to that until they are of age.

well im 13 and I watch R movies but only if my mom has seen it and thinks its ok to watch. She trusts me. Also, I have an 18 year old brother who got me into horror movies and stuff so there is no stopping me. It really depends on the parents and the movie. ask your parents what they really dont want you too see. If it is in that movie then just stay away from that movie. If they dont want you to see violene or sumthin and the movie you want to watch has no violence then explain that too them. you know what I mean?

Wow. You have great parents. Say hi to them for me.
You are supposed to be at least 17 to watch R rated movies. There is a reason for this. The more you expose your young self to the smooching and other distasteful things in those movies, the more acceptable it seems to you. You can try to deny it, but it is true. Movies today are just outrageously raunchy .
You're parents care about you. Just wait until your 17. Then you'll have the rest of your life to watch them. Don't be in such a hurry to grow up. Your friends may razz you and laugh, but deep inside they are thinking - how come MY parents don't care.

Age really isn't a factor, but maturity is.
Tell them you won't repeat anything you see in the film. Also, consider why they are not letting you watch them - is it because there is too much sexual content, or too much violence?
Maybe they are worried it will emotionally scar you somehow.
Just talk with your parents and you should be able to compromise.

Because R rated films are meant for people 18 and older. Also, your parents probably feel that you're not ready for a film such as that.
