I assume you mean Stanford? It is extremely difficult to get in. They only took 11% of those who applied there last year, which isn't much less selective than Harvard, which took 9% of its applicants. Your grades and test scores would have to be close to perfect to get in (I know someone who did have a perfect SAT score who was rejected).

You mean Stanford, right?

I have less than a 4.0 unweighted GPA, I'm not the top of my class, slightly above average but not stellar test scores, and I'm Asian (which usually means harder chances), AND I just got into Stanford. And I've seen 4.75 valedictorians with a 2370 and national awards get straight out rejected. Just goes to show that you can never be certain. If you're into a school, just go for it!
My advice? Be yourself in your answers! That's the only way you're going to stand out amongst all the other applicants with similar backgrounds, test scores, and everything else. I am pretty darn certain it was a quirky application essay that helped determine my fate. Write an essay that sounds like YOU, and don't try to impress them with anything else. Get creative! You're a sailor? That's pretty darn unique and impressive. Work with that!
Best of luck!

they have a 9% admission rate. For minorities it is almost double.
Still I need to know you SAT / ACT scores to make a good prediction about your chance because GPA is only one factor they look at
P.S. : I have applied to Stanford for Fall 2008

it is pretty hard but anyone could go there if you put your mind to it, even you if you really wanted it
