Madison is a beautiful and fun place during the warmer months and in the winter one has to get a little creative. You are one of 40,000 students and one of the pros to this is that you are almost certain to find your niche here. Whether you're interested in politics liberal or conservative, Greek life, music, theater, or football, you will find like-minded friends and have a good time. Whether you're a freshman or a transfer student, LIVE IN THE DORMS, you will meet tons of people. Depending on your interests, you will find something here. Sports are always fun and depending on your crew may or may not be a big deal to you. The west side of campus does basically shut down during games.
The party school reputation exists for a reason. It will be wise to have some will power to overcome peer pressure and uh maybe stay in and study on a Friday night once in a while. ALSO if you're not a drinker I want to emphasize that there are plenty of kids who do not drink. (and many more who don't binge drink, if that isn't your deal)
I could go on and on. Personally I enjoyed my experience at UW and made friends for life. There are draw backs but all of the bad things I'd say about the university have more to do with the bureaucracy that surrounds the organization of the university. (not really a social topic)

Even though it is an excellent school, UW-Madison has always had a reputation as a party school with a lot of drinking.
