Whenever I go into the mountains I always get really bad altitude sickness. I get dizzy and I feel really sick. We don't go that often but when we do I would like to feel good and be able to enjoy it. Any advice?

You may not be cut out for higher altitudes.

About all you can do is make sure you are in good physical condition...job, bicycle, etc to get your heart and lungs working better.

There are products a doctor can prescribe to help you breathe better, but they have side effects.

You might try increasing water intake before you go, take an aspirin every 8 hours for a day before you go.........and munch a couple of ginger snaps to see if that helps......or drink ginger tea...........it's a stretch, but might work for you.

I lived at 10,000 feet, worked and played (skied) at 12,000+. I had a friend who could not come visit for the same reason. Anything above 8,000 feet and she was dizzy and had a terrible headache. (now I'm like you, nothing above 9,000 feet.....bummer)

You can go to the doctor ahead of time (a few days) and get an infusion of red blood cells. This will help to carry more oxygen and alleviate the symptoms. Note, this will NOT give you license to ski all day and not get sick to your stomach! Some doctors won't do this, however, so you might try using a diuretic to remove excess fluid, thereby upping your blood pressure a little bit and making the symptoms less severe. Good luck, and be safe!

I come from the Rockies. Drink water and breath deep, don't get too physical the first day or so. Higher altitudes, the air is thinner, so deep breathing helps.

Make sure you are properly fed and hydrated before you go, that may be part of the problem.
You may also have a vision or vertigo problem.

Me too, so go to your local drugstore. They have meds to take to prevent it and is well worth it and isn't all that expensive. Why suffer when help is available. I think one of them is Dramamine taken a half hour before boarding a plane, for example. Ask your druggist/pharmacist.

Drink lots and lots of water, avoid alcohol and take it easy the first few days!
