My Grandma just got a computer and in all of her e-mails she writes "LOL" and I find it quite freaky.

Have you ever read Orsen Well's book "1984"?
It talks about the government encouraging "new-speak" a language designed to limit the amount of emotions a person can put a name to, so in theory if they can't name it, they can't continue to feel it. This, and text language, seems to come close to what he was describing. By minimizing the use of words, we limit our ability to convey a range of emotions, and ideas.

No. It's good that she continues to learn new things. She has to keep up with the grandkids or everyone will think she is really, really old and out of touch with the world. Be glad she is willing and able.

Why? You're using language that she uses aren't you? So give her a break and let her use some of yours.
Otherwise she may not let you use any of hers and you'd have to 'sign' most of your conversations.
