Not always. I think my husband is a much better listener than I am.

I think that it is a great skill. And as such it could be cultivated. I personally worked very hard to achieve a victory over my own lack of patience. So, it is very much possible for anyone and everyone. I also would like to report that results of my hard work were overwhelming: I am now beloved family member, best friend to all and the most valued employee... So go figure...
Now, I can not say one way or another: there are some great listeners among both genders, if you catch them in that special mood... Otherwise, no one gives you the time of the day. Short attention span is a national problem.

I'de say, generally, men and women listen just as well, but listen 2 different ways

Men: Very ADD listeners. Listen for overall details, look at gestures and expressions, attentive to when something seems funny, awesome, or other "big" emotion. Listen either just to listen and have 0 opinion, or to help fix it, or just to help the guy out by saying "that was awesome" or "wow, thatsabitch"

Women: More attentive listeners. Listen for more in depth details on many different levels and stories. Connects things and offers many opinions afterwards. Listens to comfort and soemtimes understand.

Definitely. I am not a good listener. My wife is always talking to me when I am reading or watching TV and it makes her mad when I say." What?" I love her with all my heart but she has never learned to sort out the interesting stuff from the boring stuff. If I listened to everything she said I would go nuts. I would be interested to hear about stuff that happens at her job because she meets some interesting characters at work. She is a clerk at a dollar store. But I really don't care what the cats did today. I don't even really like cats. She is a much better listener than me.

I hate to generalize (because not everyone is the same), but I think that women are sometimes more patient listeners than men. Women (in general) are brought up to be compassionate, attentive, and nurturing..and part of nurturing is an ability to listen to the plights and problems of others with an empathetic ear. Women are very verbally communicative. I don't know if this makes us "better" listeners, but perhaps so...or maybe we just listen in a different way. Men seem to listen with a different perspective: they tend to want to solve problems, whereas women listen with the intent to be a comfort to someone else. Maybe the end result is similar: both men and women try to help in their own way.

Are you KIDDING? Or are you just very young? Haven't you heard the jokes -- TRUE jokes -- about men only listening with "Man Ears"? Men don't listen to HALF of what women say. They don't even listen to EACH other that much. I keep telling men that if they LISTENED, they might even hear something they liked! How many women have HINTED that they might like to spice up the love life -- but because men don't LISTEN, it goes right through their heads??

You KNOW, don't you, that if you want to arrange an outing with another couple, you MUST talk to the women -- if you talk to the man he won't remember or get the details right.

If you find a man that listens -- GIVES YOU HIS UNDIVIDED ATTENTION -- HOLD ON TO HIM because he's more rare than Moon Rocks!

And to those of you who answered above -- first of all, if it's interesting to your woman, it SHOULD be interesting to you. Secondly, when you continue to read or watch TV when your woman is talking to you, all that shows her is that the book or stupid TV show is more important to you than SHE is.

Not particularly.. but some guys just don't want to listen. plus, i think guys think girls "listen" better because most guys go to girls when they have a problem and to talk about it because they're afraid the guys they talk to won't listen or be able to help them.

Those who believe gender differences are due to nature also often associate women with traits that would allow them to be better listeners, though some also believe this is a result of societal pressures to conform.

I'd bet that women are better listeners when speaking with other women.

They are on the same wavelength.

I sometimes have to tell my wife to give me the "cliffs notes" version of the story because she tends to add extraneous details & runs off on tangents that dilute the overall message.

I've seen this in other women as well.

I don't have the patience to be honest.

My wife tends to listen to me pretty well, too... so based on my anecdotal evidence, I'll go with the ladies on this one.

I have for years been trying to figure out why the women I date will talk and claim my indulgence but never listen when it is my turn to talk. They want to go babbling on about something else that seems so petty...I will not generalize though, I won't be made into a fool. I guess people are just individuals no matter their gender...Peace
